International Flights into Costa Rica fly into either San Jose (SJO) or Liberia (LIR). You’ll find a wider variety of flights (and often cheaper) to San Jose, but Liberia is closer to Nosara, about 5.5 hours vs 2.5 hours respectively.
Once you’re in country, you have plenty of options to get to Nosara. You can elect a Car Rental, Flight, Charter Van, or a Bus from either airport.
It’s a short 45 minute flight into Nosara on Sansa (NOB) from SJO (or 20min from LIR). Car Rentals can be found online and there are tons of options around the airports. Here in Guiones we have two companies (Economy & National). If you’d prefer not to drive in an unfamiliar country with wacky driving habits, we can set you up with a very reliable Charter Van. If you’re feeling adventurous and getting here quickly isn’t a concern, taking the Bus can be an option (it’s highly recommended that you are fluent in Spanish for this one).
We are more than happy to help with any questions about these bookings to ease the stress of your vacation planning. We can set up your charter van (and really prefer it since we’ll be in contact with the driver from the moment they pick you up until they drop you off, assuring that you can relax and enjoy the countryside along the way).
Driving Directions From San Jose to Playa Guiones, Nosara
From Juan Santa Maria International Airport (SJO), take the Pan American Highway (Route 1) North. The initial signs will indicate towards San Ramon once you’re on the Pan American Highway, indicated on the signs as Route 1.
Stay on this road until you make the Left Hand Turn towards the Tempisque Bridge (aka: Puente de la Amistad) at the Tres Hermanas Restaurant (There’s a very large Howler Monkey and Bull in front).
The Tempisque Bridge is open which eliminated the ferry crossing (if you haven’t been since the 90s). Driving time for this portion of the trip will be approximately 3 hrs.
You will know when you are nearing the Tempisque Bridge turnoff by the change in the color of the pavement to a reddish color. A short time later you will cross the Rio Abandgaras Bridge and you will see the road signs directing you to turn to Ferry Tempisque (which you will not be taking).
Just past the Delta Gasoline Station make a left turn. There will be a restaurant across the street with a Giant Bull and Howler Monkey. This may be a god time to stretch your legs and fill up on gas.
This road will take you to the Tempisque Bridge (called: Puente de la Amistad). After crossing the Bridge, continue on the main road until it “Ts” with Highway 21.
Turn right towards the town of Nicoya. About 20 minutes later you’ll turn left at the Junction to Nicoya (at the KFC). You’ll continue down this road for about 3 to 5 minutes until you get to the “one way only” sign. Make a right and a quick left and this will take you past the historic plaza and church in Nicoya. Pass the park and continue until the road ends and make a left. You’ll take your next right and this will put you on the main road to Samara and Nosara. Continue on this road for about a half an hour until you come to the Castrol Gas Station on the left side of the road. It’s another 30-40 minutes to get to Nosara, so if you’re in need of gas, now’s the time.
Immediately after the Gas Station you will make a right turn onto the road which has a downward slope. Remain on this road until it comes to an intersection, follow the signs to the right and through Garza and Esperanza. After passing the beach village of Garza you will have about 10-15 minutes remaining until you see Coconut Harry’s. Continue straight though and you’ll make your next left at Giardino Tropicale. Follow this road towards the beach and make your second right. This road will take you directly to our reception inside “The Frog Pad.”
Recommendations:
Remember that the speed limit signs are in Kilometers. Flashing headlights from an approaching car usually mean that a police radar unit is up ahead or there is reason to exercise extra caution. Relax, take your time, enjoy the drive and watch out for potholes. You really will get here in just about the same amount of time.
